Brennan McDonald discusses the influence of music on empathy with Greater Good Magazine
Brennan McDonlad talks about his recent study on the influence of music on empathy in an interview with University of California, Berkeley’s “Greater Good Magazine”. Participants watched some neutral as well as emotional videos of people recounting autobiographical events. These videos were accompanied by either neural or sad music. Interestingly, sad music in particular enhanced participants’ empathy and compassion towards the people shown within the videos. However, this sad music had no influence on participants’ ability to take on the other person’s perspective.
