­Design Competition for the T1 Terminal Façade at Munich Airport, 1st Prize for Schulz and Schulz

Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz (Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I) impressed the jury with their design as part of the two-phase ideas competition for the new T/EINS facade at Munich Airport and emerged as the winners.

Due to the age of Terminal 1, the commitment to net-zero by 2035, and the now-increased maintenance costs, Flughafen München GmbH intends to carry out a comprehensive renovation of Terminal 1 in the medium term. In this context, the “completely new facade” option, combined with new building services, is the only one that meets FMG’s net-zero requirements. The facade concepts developed for Terminal 1 are also to be applied to the above-ground portion of the Z central building during the subsequent implementation.

The jury’s written assessment states, among other things: “This facade design is particularly compelling due to its sensitive alignment with the existing structure and its respectful treatment of the defining features of the current appearance. Key characteristics of the existing architecture are incorporated and translated into a contemporary architectural language without losing the building’s original character. In this way, the design succeeds in balancing continuity and further development, which is particularly commendable given that the old and new structures will coexist during construction.”
