Federal President Steinmeier opens new German embassy in Vienna
The President of the Federal Republic of Germany officially opened the new building of the German Embassy in Vienna on October 22, 2025 as part of his state visit to Austria. This ceremony was the crowning glory of one of the most extraordinary building projects by Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz (Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I), who won the architectural competition in 2016 with their Leipzig-based architectural firm Schulz und Schulz.
Speaking alongside his Austrian counterpart Van der Bellen, Steinmeier spoke of a bright and open building that appears restrained but responsible. Van der Bellen described the new embassy as a symbol of the close partnership between Austria and Germany. The new building in Vienna cost around 45 million euros. The building also houses Germany's Permanent Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
