Construction of a pavilion with load-bearing walls made of natural stone
The Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I, held by Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz (EKI) and the Chair of Structural Design, headed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Beckh (TWP), are collaborating with research partners the German Natural Stone Association (DNV) and the companies Bamberger Natursteinwerk Hermann Graser GmbH, Franken-Schotter GmbH & Co. KG, and Kusser Granitwerke GmbH, are jointly constructing a natural stone pavilion on the campus of TU Dresden.
The pavilion is being built as part of the research project “VeBTamaN” on the cost-effectiveness of load-bearing vertical structural elements made of natural stone, funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU), and demonstrates the potential of local granite, limestone, and sandstone as a standardized building material for primary load-bearing structures in sustainable buildings. The mock-up illustrates the slenderness of load-bearing walls and columns made of natural stone, their structural design, and the jointing of the solid elements; it also serves as an information display on the research findings.
The construction of the pavilion at Zelleschen Weg 40 is generously supported by WOLFF & MÜLLER Tief- und Straßenbau GmbH & Co. KG and began on October 1 with the construction of the foundation slab, which the company’s Dresden branch carried out free of charge.
Construction of the above-ground components will begin on October 12 under the leadership of the Bamberg-based natural stone company Hermann Graser GmbH. Tim Mahn (TWP) and Michael Senn (EKI) will be involved in the construction, and the project is receiving financial support from Franken-Schotter GmbH & Co. KG and Kusser Granitwerke GmbH. Sievert SE is sponsoring tubag-brand mortar and providing technical support.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved and to all our supporters! The date of the dedication ceremony will be announced at a later time.
