Definition of Terms
To ensure clarity, a few terms need to be defined in advance.
A module: is a unit of instruction consisting of one or more courses (seminars, lectures, etc.) with a common learning objective. Modules must be completed with a final module exam. The final module exam may consist of one or more assessment components, such as a written exam and/or a term paper. A fixed number of credit points is awarded for this. The final module exam is graded either with a grade or the module is marked as “passed.”
The module number in SELMA identifies a course element, for example, in a study plan. It generally consists of the faculty’s cost center, the teaching or examining institution, and the number assigned to the module in the study regulations (and in the module handbook).
Note: All letters and numbers after the hyphen must always be included to quickly identify the module in question and help locate it more quickly.
The course number ( more commonly known as the course code) always begins with “K…” and is formed from the aforementioned combinations of numbers.
Please note: Courses may be part of multiple modules and therefore do not always have the same number as the corresponding module.
The exam number is composed , similarly to the module number, of the faculty’s cost center, the teaching/examining institution, and the module number from the study regulations.
Please note: There may be differences from the module number here.
A distinction is made between:
- Exam associated with a course component: The exam relates to a specific course within the module. Therefore, the exam number is derived from the course number and begins with “K…”.
- Module-concluding examination: The examination pertains to the module. Therefore, the examination number is derived from the module number and begins with “M…”.
Registration for Modules, Courses, and Examinations (or Preliminary Examinations)
When registering in SELMA, please follow the sequence outlined below:
- Module registration: Registration for courses and/or (preliminary) examination requirements is only possible if you have registered for the module
- Registration for courses (classes): Materials uploaded by the lecturer and other information are visible only to participants who have registered and been accepted in SELMA
- Registration for (Preliminary) Examinations: For (preliminary) examinations accompanying a module, registration is only possible if the student has registered for the corresponding course and the department has accepted the registration in the system (verbal agreements have no legal validity)

- K1507-LM2201Ü Course Planning (Ü) and K1507-LM2203S Overall Planning: by October 12, 2026, 11:00 p.m.
Exam Registration
A distinction must be made here between registration for the preliminary examination requirements (PVL) and the final module examination (PL). PVL is a course requirement consisting of participation in the exercises for both parts of the module and a presentation with a written report in the Overall Planning section. PL is an oral exam that can be taken after successful completion of both parts of the module.
- K1507-LM2201Ü Specialized Planning (Ü) and K1507-LM2201S Overall Planning (S): Registration ( or withdrawal, if applicable) must always take place during the second module semester in which the course is taken. In the 2026–27 winter semester , registration takes place from November 17 to December 3, 2026.
K … indicates that the PVL is linked to the course, meaning that the system automatically registers students for the PVL when they register for the course. This means that students must drop the course if they do not wish to complete the PVL (and thus the course as well). Otherwise, a grade of 5 will be assigned for failure to complete the course.
- M1507-LM220 Oral Exam: Registration for the Winter Semester 2024/25 , November 17–December 3, 2026.
M … indicates that independent registration for the PL is required.
