Hardware
For the study of architecture and landscape architecture, the purchase of a powerful computer is recommended.
For the first semester of study, a particularly fast computer is not required; subsequently, PC work becomes more intensive in both architecture and landscape architecture studies.
With the start of the second semester, the purchase of a powerful device is recommended. It is recommended to purchase a high quality, well-equipped device directly to avoid having to purchase it again during the course of your studies.
We recommend the following hardware specifications for fluent working in CAD and rendering:
Stationary PC
A stationary computer generally offers better value for money, but unfortunately is not portable. Especially for complex renderings and animations, a well-equipped desktop computer is usually better suited.
- CPU: at least 4 cores and at least 3 GHz
- RAM: at least 8 GB, better 16 GB
- Graphics card: a powerful graphics card is recommended, at least 4 GB VRAM, better 6 GB
- Hard disk: SSD/M2, 500 GB or more
Notebook
Laptops usually have a worse price-performance ratio than desktop computers, but are portable. A laptop allows you to work on your own computer at the university or to take the computer with you for group or project work.
When buying a laptop, you should pay attention to similar characteristics as when buying a stationary PC.
- CPU: at least 4 cores and at least 2.5 GHz
- Working memory (RAM): at least 8 GB, better 16 GB
- Graphics card: a graphics card is recommended, at least 4 GB VRAM
- Hard disk: SSD/M2, also better at least 500 GB
Screen
When buying a device, you should also pay attention to the screen size and screen resolution, as well as that it is as matt as possible.
When buying a desktop monitor, a size of at least 21 inches with a resolution of at least Full-HD is recommended.
A laptop screen should be at least 13 inches, although this size is mainly suitable for working on the go. For working with CAD, the purchase of a larger external monitor is recommended.
With high screen resolutions or high pixel densities, it is important to ensure that the programs used scale correctly so as not to strain the eye with, for example, font that is too small.
Eye exercises, breaks and consciously limiting screen consumption when working on the PC for long periods are also highly recommended.
Apple or Windows
From a technical point of view, the recommendation is clearly Windows. For the same price, a much more powerful device can be expected. The integration options in existing networks are also much better and the software selection is larger.
