DBFZ Leipzig honored with Saxon Timber Construction Prize
Projects in Dresden, Chemnitz and Leipzig were awarded the Saxon Timber Construction Prize 2023 last Tuesday. According to Minister of State Thomas Schmidt, the Timber Construction Award is an outstanding demonstration of the impressive architectural and structural solutions that are possible with this special and indigenous building material.
Professors Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz (Chair of Architectural Design and Construction I) were awarded 3rd prize for the "Technikum Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum DBFZ in Leipzig". The DBFZ office building in Leipzig is the first multi-storey building of its type in Saxony. Only the stiffening staircase cores are made of reinforced concrete and serve to provide vertical access and stiffen the overall structure. The construction and façade are based on sustainable and innovative timber construction from local timber management. Wood and other naturally renewable building materials dominate, in line with the project's motto "Wood as far as the eye can see".
