Preventive fire protection for existing buildings - designing individual measures for a flexible application, using the example of the Görges-building, TUD campus
Preventive fire protection is a term that covers structural, technical and organizational measures to counteract the development or spread of fire and smoke and to ensure the rescue of people and animals as well as effective extinguishing work. Depending on the classification of the building (including building height, floor area, special functions), the requirements can be very extensive and have an impact on the architectural language, choice of materials and usage processes.
While these measures can be incorporated into the design of new buildings at an early stage, taking integral planning approaches into account, they pose major challenges for all those involved in the planning of existing buildings. If there are also requirements regarding the protection of historical monuments, it becomes particularly complex. In such situations, reference is often made to the "protection of existing buildings". However, this is no longer valid if uses change or if a danger to life and limb can be assumed due to certain factors.
This applies, for example, to the Görges Building at TU Dresden, which currently houses the Institute of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the ALTANA Gallery and various lecture and seminar rooms. Technical equipment, the volume of users and the type of use, which have changed considerably since the building was constructed in 1905, lead to high demands on fire protection. These are expressed in individual statements regarding non-regular use (e.g. for vernissages), high maintenance requirements, special technical solutions and consequently increased costs.
