Excursion from June 10 to 14, 2025 to the Dümmer Nature Park (Lower Saxony)
As part of a multi-day excursion to the Diepholzer Moorniederung, 13 students took an in-depth look at the topics of moorland protection, moorland use, climate change and landscape conservation using the example of this previously little-known region in north-western Germany.
Guided tours and lectures by and at nature conservation and research institutions, landscape conservation and agricultural businesses illustrated and experienced moorland areas in a wide variety of uses.
The participants got to know moors as complex systems from many perspectives and gained behind-the-scenes insights into the practical effects and possibilities in agriculture and landscape conservation, water management on (rewetted) raised bogs and fens as well as nature conservation aspects and the special features of the moor habitat.
Lake Dümmer not only played a role as a beautiful backdrop in the accommodation, but was also a central topic with all its challenges, from tourism to substance inputs and flooding to wildlife management.
The look into the future of typical moorland ecosystems against the background of the common good in times of climate change left a deep impression, which was passed on at the Institute's summer party by means of a film specially made by the students.
