Synopsis:
The use of high-strength steels offers significant economic and ecological advantages. However, as steel strength increases, producing welded connections with mechanical and technological properties matching those of the base material becomes more challenging. The welding process, filler materials, and temperature control are critical for ensuring proper connection properties, affectiong both the weld seam and the heat-affected zone. In addition, in welded constructions, some benefits of high-strength steels are mitigated by conservative design rules and more extensive execution requirements. This applies not only to the design of welded connections but also to the influence of residual stresses on the buckling resistance of structural members.
This contribution presents the results of various research projects on welded constructions of high-strength steels. Firstly, the production of high-strength steels, the influences of alloys, manufacturing processes and heat treatments are discussed. Subsequently, the welded joints, the influence of the welding filler materials and welding process parameters are described. As a result of extensive experimental and numerical investigatiosn, a new design model for welded joints is presented. Finally, investigations on box columns made of high-strength steels, the development of residual stresses and their influnce on the buckling resistance are shown.
