Start of beaver monitoring in the Šluknov region

Preparation for wildlife observation - A beaver receives a tracking device
In the week from 17.08. - 24.08.2025, the project partner Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU) installed special live traps for beavers at several locations in the Šluknov region. The aim of this measure was to safely capture beavers, equip them with GPS transmitters and then release them back into the wild. Using these devices, the team can track the movements and activities of beavers around beaver dams in detail to better understand their behavior and response to precipitation events. The task was carried out by experienced people who have the necessary permits and qualifications and for whom the welfare of the animals is a top priority. In total, the team managed to tag two beavers in this way. During this operation, colleagues from TU Dresden also joined the CZU team on site and carried out a series of measurements, including water depth, flow velocity and the structure of the beaver dams. These measurements are necessary to assess the hydraulic impact of beaver dams.
