Excursion of the ACCESS course „Form finding techniques of lightweight structures” – summer term 2023
On the previous Tuesday, the chair of Structural Design organized an excursion for the students enrolled in the "Form Finding Techniques of Lightweight Structures" course. The purpose of the excursion was to provide a firsthand experience of the ongoing developments at the roof structure of Dresden Central. This proved to be an extraordinary opportunity for us, as we witnessed the installation of new skylight elements and the replacement of the structural membrane.
Continuing our exploration, we had the privilege of visiting the magnificent lightweight ETFE-foil grid shell structure that elegantly covered the main courtyard of the Royal Palace. The intricate design and engineering marvel of this structure left a lasting impression on all of us. Our itinerary then led us to a temporary membrane roof structure situated along the banks of the Elbe river, which was specifically designed to host concerts and film nights. The tour concluded on a delightful note at the a nearby beer garden.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Andreas Bach from Deutsche Bahn, Anja Liebscher from Vössing Ingenieure, and Holger Krause from SKD for generously sharing their time and providing us with insightful explanations throughout the excursion. Their expertise and guidance added great value to our learning experience.
