Frontiers Planet Prize
The Frontiers Planet Prize recognizes transformative research that shows the greatest potential to address the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. With this in mind, the selection process is exceptionally rigorous and thorough, and involves all stakeholders in the academic community.
The jury will select the competition winners independently and according to the strictest standards of impartiality.
Each submission will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Applicability of the research findings
- Scalability of the application
- Number of planetary boundaries involved
- Contribution to the general understanding of planetary boundaries
- Scientific novelty
- Research quality
The research must be based on a single research article published in established, peer-reviewed scientific journals with robust peer-review and transparent publication processes.
The article’s acceptance date must fall within the two years prior to the start of the competition: for the upcoming edition— from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2026.
The prize welcomes groundbreaking research from all disciplines, provided it focuses on planetary boundaries and presents original research findings or insightful reviews and syntheses that contribute to reducing the destabilization of the Earth system.
The research outlines actionable solutions or pathways that can be implemented in policies, adapted for commercial use, or otherwise contribute to keeping global development within planetary boundaries.
The research advances scientific understanding and quantification of planetary boundaries. It examines how planetary boundaries are influenced or influence life-supporting systems/the Earth system, or explores the implications of incorporating planetary boundaries into thinking across disciplines, sectors, and activities/applications.
The research must be linked to multiple planetary boundaries within the Earth system. Research that examines interactions and relationships among multiple planetary boundaries will be prioritized.
To address the planetary crisis and mobilize comprehensive global change, all perspectives that reflect the diverse contributions of the nominees should be taken into account. During the nomination process, we strongly encourage each national nomination committee to address any unintended biases in the proposed candidates.
