Joint research data management as a prerequisite for environmental and climate protection: Earth system scientists meet in Dresden on 9 and 10 June
TU Dresden plays a prominent role in the National
Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). With the help of the NFDI, data from science and research is to be systematically indexed, secured and made more widely and easily accessible and internationally networked. The TUD is currently involved in nine of the 19 NFDI consortia funded nationwide. It is the leading coordinator of NFDI4Earth, i.e. the data and institutions of the Earth System Sciences. The consortium's kick-off meeting will take place at the Transparent Factory in Dresden on 9 and 10 June 2022.
Research processes are increasingly digital. This means that digital research data, their provision and reusability are of central importance for new scientific findings and innovations. With the establishment of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) decided in 2018, the Federal Government and the Länder want to make these research data more usable for German and international science in a better and sustainable way.
The NFDI4Earth consortium, coordinated by Prof. Lars Bernard, geoinformatician and Chief Officer Digitalisation (CDIO) at TU Dresden, takes care of the digital needs of researchers in Earth system sciences. A multitude of sensor and simulation data in very high spatial, temporal and thematic resolution leads to rapidly increasing data volumes. The description and assessment of Earth system processes, their dependencies and changes therefore urgently requires efficient research data management as well as more powerful collaboration environments for joint, cross-disciplinary data analysis.
This is done in close coordination or cooperation with the leading national institutions in the Earth system sciences. In addition to the TU Dresden, this includes 60 institutions, among others the Alfred Wegener Institute (Bremerhaven), the German Climate Computing Centre (Hamburg), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (Potsdam), the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (Jena), the Environmental Research Centre Leipzig as well as the universities of Leipzig, Frankfurt/Main and Hanover, and many more. They will come together for the official project kick-off on 9 and 10 June 2022 at the Transparent Factory in Dresden.
In particular, the opening on 9 June from 1 to 3 p.m. will provide a good introduction and overview of the topic with welcoming addresses and introductory talks by NFDI4Earth spokesperson Prof. Lars Bernard, Prof. Ralf Seppelt (UFZ Leipzig) and Prof. Philippe Bonnet (University of Copenhagen).
