Harald Lesch, Wolfgang Ehlers and Artifacts from Art to Science for the GAMM Conference at the Lecture Hall Center.
From May 30 to June 02, the largest German conference in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics, the annual meeting of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM), will take place at the TU Dresden. Up to 1200 participants are expected. With a broad spectrum of lectures on current developments in numerical mechanics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, analysis, numerical mathematics and scientific computing, the conference reflects the current state of the art in these fields. Here, a large interdisciplinary network of active scientists meets for lectures and discussions and to develop new ideas. The event takes place once a year at changing locations in Germany and other European countries.
This year, GAMM, which was founded in Dresden, celebrates its 100th anniversary. The development over this period is breathtaking. Prof. Wolfgang Ehlers from Stuttgart will present this under the title "100 years of GAMM: motivation, history and achievements". The lecture is open to the public and will take place on Thursday, June 1 at 8:00 p.m. in the Audimax in the Lecture Hall Center of the TU Dresden, Bergstraße 64. The event will be framed by musicians of the Sächsischen Staatskapelle.
Another highlight of this year's GAMM Annual Meeting is the public lecture by Prof. Harald Lesch. Entitled "What does the universe have to do with me?", Prof. Lesch will offer a walk through the empirical, quantitative sciences of the cosmos, matter, space and time. The event will take place on Friday, June 2, at 8 p.m. in the Audimax in the Lecture Hall Center of the TU Dresden, Bergstraße 64. If there is a large crowd, the lecture will be transmitted via video stream to another lecture hall.
The conference will also be accompanied by a public exhibition: "100 years of GAMM - a scientific art exhibition". It shows artifacts from scientific and artistic collections of the TU Dresden, selected artworks of regional and international artists as well as installations that combine art, science and technology. The objects on display have been specially selected to combine applied mathematics and mechanics in a historical perspective. Here, visitors can experience how artificial intelligence interprets this connection, how symmetry and phase transitions inspire artworks, and how geometric objects collectively change. Direct interaction with a fluidic structure and moving models of mechanisms and gears bring science to life. From historic calculating machines to a new exhibit of the Mathematics Experience Land, there is science to look at, plus an encounter with personalities who shaped GAMM and scientists who do so today. The exhibit will be open during the conference at the HSC in Room 304. A midissage with demonstrations will be held on June 1, 7 p.m., with various artists in attendance.
