Growing Hope in project U_CAN: How Zhytomyr Finds Inspiration for Urban Transformation in Dresden
In late September, a delegation of EU-Horizon-Project "U_CAN. Ukraine towards Carbon Neutrality" travelled from Zhytomyr to Dresden to explore how urban greening can shape a more sustainable, climate-resilient future. Over four days, the Ukrainian city’s representatives immersed themselves in Dresden’s innovative approaches to urban gardening, citizen engagement, and climate-friendly land use - gathering ideas that could transform Zhytomyr’s own urban landscape.
The visit strengthens the partnership between Ukrainian pilot cities and European Mission Cities, fostering the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and practical solutions for climate neutrality. Zhytomyr’s delegation focused on reimagining a 4,000 m² site of disused municipal greenhouses as a vibrant hub for community gardening, environmental education, and citizen participation.
Tour of horticultural projects, TUD-Workshops and exchanges
During their visit, the delegation explored a variety of projects, from Dresden’s Südpark and its preparations for the Bundesgartenschau 2033 to community gardens run by Stadtgärten e.V. and the Wurzelwerk Pieschen initiative, which combines gardening, education, and social activities. Workshops at TU Dresden and structured exchanges with city departments provided insights into innovative governance models, citizen engagement, and sustainable urban planning.

Reflecting on the visit, Maryna Kuznietsova (U_CAN coordinator at Zhytomyr City Council) said: “We were inspired by how Dresden involves citizens in shaping their city’s green spaces. Learning to make decisions collectively, communicate, care for the environment, and use vacant land effectively will form the foundation of our pilot project to renovate urban greenhouses in Zhytomyr.”
