Municipal cycling planning using open data
In the “bikeSim” project, traffic scientists at the TU Dresden are developing a web tool for forecasting the utilization of cycling infrastructure - project completion: May 20, 2021 The promotion of cycling is currently at the top of the agenda for many municipalities in Germany. The primary goals are the reduction of noise and pollutant emissions as well as the contribution to climate protection and the generally higher quality of life and attractiveness in cities. It would be of great help for the municipalities to be able to assess the impact of potential measures in advance and thus be able to prioritize the use of the often scarce municipal budget funds.
This is where the “bikeSim” web application comes in. With it, municipalities can change the properties of route sections in the (bicycle) traffic network in the event of a plan and simulate the use of bicycle traffic facilities in their (bicycle) traffic network. From this, conclusions can be drawn for the redesign and further development of the cycle path network. The application is based on GPS route data as well as open geographic and traffic data (open data). The web application was initially developed as a prototype for the city of Dresden as part of a feasibility study. Researchers from the professorship for traffic ecology of the faculty of traffic sciences "Friedrich List" of the TU Dresden were involved in the development together with the Dresden start-up Cyface. The research project ran from November 1, 2019 to April 30, 2021.
The official completion of the project will take place on May 20, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. via an online event. Interested media representatives are cordially invited. You will receive the dial-in link after registering at:
Program schedule:
10:00 am - Official welcome (Dr. Földi, BMVI)
10:05 am - Presentation of the participants
10:15 am - Presentation of the project (S. Huber - TU Dresden, A. Schnabel - Cyface)
10:45 am - Discussion and question-and-answer session
11:15 am - End of the public part
A continuation of the development work is sought in subsequent research projects. The aim is to expand the web application, make the approach applicable throughout Germany and ensure the quality of the results in cooperation with cities and municipalities.
