Professor Élisabeth Guazzelli Receives Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Research Award
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has awarded Professor Élisabeth Guazzelli the prestigious Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Research Award. This accolade recognizes outstanding achievements in research and promotes scientific exchange between France and Germany.
Professor Guazzelli is an internationally renowned expert in fluid mechanics, with a particular focus on complex fluids, including particulate multiphase flows and sedimentation processes. Her ground-breaking work and innovative experiments have established new paradigms in the investigation of suspensions and granular rheology.
Professor Guazzelli completed her academic training at the École Normale Supérieure de Fontenay-aux-Roses (now ENS Lyon) and University of Paris-Sud (now Paris Saclay). Spending her entire career as a scientist at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France, she has led a very active and diversified research group at Aix-Marseille University, and has now moved to University Paris Cité. She has also conducted research at prestigious institutions such as Stanford University (USA), the University of Cambridge (UK), the University of Tokyo (Japan) and the Indian Institute of Science (India).
In addition to her scientific achievements, she has made significant contributions to the academic community by serving on the Editorial Board of the Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics and as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics since 2005, where she currently serves as JFM Rapids Editor. She is also a Rector of the International Center for Mechanical Sciences in Udine (Italy).
Throughout her career, Professor Guazzelli has received numerous honors, including the EUROMECH Fluid Mechanics Prize (2016) and the Fluid Dynamics Prize of the American Physical Society (2023). In 2012, she was named a Knight of the Legion of Honour and received the Prix Paul Doistau–Émile Blutet from the French Academy of Sciences.
The Gay-Lussac Humboldt Research Award will facilitate an enhanced research collaboration between Professor Guazzelli and scientists at TU Dresden. Professor Dr. Bernhard Vowinckel, who holds the Chair for Transport Processes in Hydro-Systems at TU Dresden and is the host of this collaboration, expressed his enthusiasm:
"It is a great honor to collaborate with an internationally acclaimed scientist like Élisabeth Guazzelli. Her ground-breaking insights into fluid mechanics and our shared interest in particulate flows open up exciting opportunities for new research approaches."
This award not only celebrates Professor Guazzelli’s exceptional scientific achievements but also highlights her contributions to fostering international research collaboration.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, along with its French partner organizations, emphasizes the vital importance of bilateral scientific cooperation between Germany and France through this prestigious award.
