Review: 35th Dresden Bridge Construction Symposium 2026
On March 18 and 19, 2026, Dresden once again became the meeting place for the bridge construction community: the Dresden Bridge Construction Symposium brought together around 1,700 experts from engineering practice, science, administration and the construction industry and once again confirmed its role as one of the most important industry meetings in the German-speaking world.
The symposium was opened by Steffen Marx, who, together with his team, presented a top-class and varied program. Numerous specialist presentations and an extensive exhibition highlighted the current challenges facing bridge construction - and the solutions that are already available today.
Central topics and impulses
The focus was particularly on issues relating to the acceleration of planning and construction processes, for example through functional tenders, serial construction methods and innovative construction processes. At the same time, the preservation of existing buildings was discussed intensively - a topic that is becoming increasingly important in view of ageing infrastructure.
Another focus was on digitalization in bridge construction. Applications such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twins and AI-supported structural inspection open up new possibilities for planning, operation and maintenance. Modern monitoring solutions - from classic measuring systems to fiber optic sensor technologies - also met with great interest and were presented in a practical way.
The presentations made it clear that the future of bridge construction lies in the combination of technical innovation, standardized processes and interdisciplinary cooperation.
Exchange, exhibition and new perspectives
In addition to the technical program, the accompanying exhibition with more than 100 exhibitors provided space for intensive exchange. Many companies presented their latest developments here - from measurement technology and building material innovations to digital applications.
The feedback from participants underlines the importance of personal exchange:
The symposium was described many times as "excellently organized", "professionally inspiring" and "an important platform for new impulses". The discussions during the breaks, which often make up the decisive added value of such events, were particularly emphasized.
Exhibitors also drew a positive conclusion: innovative solutions - for example in the field of monitoring - met with great interest and confirmed the need for practical technologies for a sustainable infrastructure.
Building bridges between aspiration and reality
In addition to all the innovative power, it also became clear that the industry continues to face major challenges. The need for modernization is high, expectations for faster implementation are rising - at the same time, framework conditions and resources remain limited.
All the more reason for a common understanding to emerge: engineers are called upon to develop viable solutions under the given conditions and to play an active role in shaping change.
Young talent and community
The student competition was once again a particular highlight, impressively demonstrating the creative and resource-efficient approaches that young engineers are using to think about the future of bridge construction.
The get-together on the evening before and numerous personal encounters also made it clear what has characterized the symposium for years: a strong, growing community that works together across specialist boundaries.
Conclusion
The 35th Dresden Bridge Construction Symposium impressively demonstrated how innovative, diverse and future-oriented bridge construction is today. At the same time, it became clear that the major challenges can only be overcome together - through exchange, cooperation and the courage to break new ground.
We are already looking forward to seeing each other again in Dresden in 2027.
