Special TUD page in the Sächsische Zeitung newspaper: The future of construction – Scarce resources and climate change require a paradigm shift
Around a quarter of the current global CO2 emissions are caused by construction. If we want to achieve our goal of being greenhouse gas neutral by 2045, we need to make some fundamental changes to our construction industry - and there’s no time to lose! This necessity means changing our methods and materials, the way we approach construction, and a reorientation of our training in this field.
Researchers and students at TU Dresden are consistently working on breaking new ground in all of these areas and quickly finding ways for these discoveries to be implemented. The current special TUD page in the Sächsische Zeitung presents four projects.
Many tiles make up the mosaic
TUD’s Professor Manfred Curbach has spent decades researching resource-saving and climate-friendly carbon concrete and has accompanied its use in practice. Make sure you read the full article to find out where he gets his passion for building from and what significance the new large-scale research center "Living Art of Building" in Lusatia has for research into new materials, processes, methods and manufacturing processes.
Living in a 3D printed home
Concrete, straight from the 3D printer: Flexible, fast and cost-effective. Scientists from TUD are working with Prof. Viktor Mechtcherine at the Institute of Construction Materials to develop a process that enables resource-saving and less labor-intensive construction methods. The testing of this process is currently well underway.
Lightweight concrete against falling rocks
Climate change and the resulting extreme weather events, not to mention terrorist attacks or war, pose particular challenges for concrete structures. How can they remain stable in the event of a sudden impact - and is this possible even with a small amount of material? This question is being researched by Prof. Birgit Beckmann and her team at the Institute of Concrete Structures at TU Dresden.
The sustainable transformation of the construction industry
Without properly trained specialists, a big change cannot be effectively implemented in the construction industry. Civil engineering students at TU Dresden have joined forces with university lecturers to gradually adapt the content of the degree program to the new requirements.
