Road to the future! - DFG funds second phase of the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio 339 "Digital Twin Road"
Success for researchers at TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD): At its meeting on 13 May 2026, the Grants Committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG) decided to continue funding two Collaborative ResearchCenters/Transregios with Dresden participation. The Collaborative Research Center/Transregio TRR 339 "Digital Twin Road - Physical-informational Representation of the Future Road System" at our faculty is thus entering its second funding period.
In TRR 339, scientists are researching the foundations of an intelligent, sustainable and digitally networked road infrastructure. The aim is to develop a "digital twin road" - a digital image of the overall road system consisting of vehicle, tires, road surface and traffic area.
The research network combines Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Transport and Social Sciences. With the help of modern sensor data and digital methods, a virtual representation of the road system is being created, which will enable traffic to be analyzed, predicted and controlled in a new quality.
Central sub-models were developed in the first funding phase. In the second phase, these are to be merged into a comprehensive digital image of the road system via standardized interfaces. In the long term, the aim is to create a fully controllable digital twin that supports intelligent traffic control, sustainable infrastructure development and automated driving.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Kaliske, spokesperson of the SFB/TRR 339, emphasizes: "With this SFB/Transregio, we are working on a globally unique project in its comprehensive, complex approach, supported by the outstanding expertise of the team."
TRR 339 is one of the DFG's large coordinated research networks and strengthens the international visibility of German infrastructure and mobility research.
