TUD Lectures "Overheating, Flooding, Survival? - How much can our society withstand?"
Drought in a record summer, floods in the Ahr Valley, tornadoes in Kentucky - society is increasingly confronted with extreme weather conditions. Scientists around the world have been warning of man-made climate change for decades and are urging governments to rethink. With the Green Deal, the EU wants to achieve a 55% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and climate targets can also be found in the coalition agreement of the new German government. But are all these steps enough? How much can our society withstand?
In the first half of 2022, the TUD Lectures series will approach the topic of “The Challenges of Our Time” from different perspectives. In the first TUD lecture “Overheating, Flooding, Survival? - How much can our society withstand?" On Wednesday, January 19th. at 6:00 p.m., the expert Dr. Valeri Goldberg put a focus on regional climate change in our region and its consequences, especially in relation to heat and drought. Dr. Valeri Goldberg works at the professorship for meteorology and researches, among other things, in the HeatResilientCity project, which was awarded the German Sustainability Research Prize 2022 on December 3rd.
The event is moderated by the student group ÜberfluTUng – change TUD, whose aim is to bring the 20 demands of the TUD's climate policy catalog of demands to the broader university public. The catalog was drawn up by volunteers in a StuRa project group following the climate action week at the beginning of 2020 and approved by the StuRa plenum in June 2020. In summer 2020, Change-TUD started with “überfluTUng 1.0”, a digital social media campaign with over 70 Sharepics, which makes the requirements visually tangible. The campaign was shared by other student representatives and initiatives across Germany. Numerous demands have been implemented since 2020. Others are currently being determined and implemented by students and employees.
