Leveraging Water for Peace
The goal of UN World Water Day on March 22, 2024 is to make water a catalyst for a more peaceful world by working together to balance the needs of all people.
In addition to integrated knowledge, the complex challenges in the area of water also require an understanding of international needs and potential regional conflicts. TU Dresden has already responded in 2004 to the need for capacity building at all levels of water management with the introduction of the international master course "Hydro Science and Engineering" at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences in the Department of Hydro Sciences, as well as with the integration of the associated European programs "Flood Risk" and "Groundwater and Global Change", which meet the current challenges in the water sector.
Another example of the commitment of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at TU Dresden to this UN World Water Day is the cooperation in the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre (ABCD-Centre), where research and teaching is carried out together with international partners in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary context to ensure water security.
One partner in this and many other projects is the Dresden-based Institute of the United Nations University (FLORES), with which the global challenges are also analysed in a local context together with the urban community in Dresden – for instance most recently at the UN Day Dresden 2023 under the theme "Water is Life".
