In-depth research
At the Institute of Soil Science we study soil processes and soil functions under different land-use systems. For that we investigate at different temporal and spatial scales in order to understand soils as a central environmental medium in its wide range.
Research at the Institute of Soil Science and Site Ecology
Our research aims above all to the enlightment of biochemical processes at the interface between soils, plants and water. Turnover of organic matter from molecular to soil profile and landscape scales make an important emphasis in doing so. Furthermore, we investigate soil-physical and hydrological research questions in relation with water and matter fluxes until the landscape scale (river basin). In doing that we combine state-of-the-art biogeochemical analytical methods as the analysis of stable isotopes (e.g. 13C in dissolved organic carbon), new soil physics methods of measurement and modern modeling approaches.
