Designing natural regeneration modules for mangrove models
Improved modeling approaches are required to support mangrove restoration efforts. While planting Rhizophora species has been popular, the focus is shifting toward restoring biodiversity and ecosystem services. Our colleagues Mohammed Sagar Islam and Uta Berger, and their coauthors, reviewed existing agent-based models (ABMs) that simulate mangrove regeneration and forest dynamics, finding that most focus on later life stages, such as saplings and trees, while neglecting critical early processes like flowering and fruiting. Their study highlights the potential of ABMs to forecast ecosystem services, such as carbon storage and coastal protection, and calls for integrating natural regeneration processes to enhance restoration planning and outcomes.
