During the summer semester of 2026, students at the Chair of Computational Landscape Ecology investigated small watercourses in and around Dresden as part of the FLOW citizen science project. In addition to the students, the FLOW Dresden local group was also active with volunteers. BUND Dresden and BUND Sachsen e. V. also utilized FLOW for their own projects - including the Interreg floodplain project “Elbauen – Labské luhy” and fire salamander monitoring in the Eastern Ore Mountains.
To wrap up the season, we’re presenting the results and bringing together different perspectives on our watercourses:
- Lisa Lang (research assistant in the Chair of Computational Landscape Ecology at TU Dresden) will present the findings of the students and the FLOW Dresden local group and demonstrate how citizen science, research, and teaching work together.
- Victor Geißler (BUND Dresden e. V.) provides insights into the results of the Interreg floodplain project.
- Lorenz Laux (BUND Saxony e. V.) will present the surveys conducted outside Dresden as well as the fire salamander monitoring in the Eastern Ore Mountains.
Afterward, we’ll discuss together: What do the data reveal about the condition of our streams? What differences are there? How can these findings contribute to the protection of our watercourses?
All participants of the fieldwork and other people interested are cordially invited to learn about the results, exchange ideas, and discuss the importance of water monitoring and citizen science together.
