Interreg Wildfire CE - project meeting in Znojmo (CZ)
TUD’s remote sensing team were on the road again last week. This time it was to the historic town of Znojmo (CZ) as part of the Interreg WildFire CE project.
Situated on the banks of the River Thaya on the border and sharing a national park with Lower Austria, Znojmo proved to be a perfect host location. With nearly a year of the project behind us it was time to reflect on what has been achieved and the next steps to ensure the successful completion of the project which include fuel mapping and fuel moisture validation in the project’s pilot sites, in our case this is the Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland National Park.
In addition to the project meeting, we were treated to a visit to the Znojmo Fire Brigade, where it was explained, in detail, the responsibilities of the brigade and the equipment they use. The brigade’s representative Miroslav Antonín described how they are still learning when it comes fighting forest fires.
This was followed by a trip to the Podyjí National Park and a talk with the park’s biodiversity manager Robert Stejskal clarified the preventative measures used in the park to avoid fires. Both Robert and Miroslav introduced the plan for a cross-border firefighting exercise planned for later this year.
We would like to thank our colleagues at CENIA (Czech Ministry for Environmental Information) for their perfect planning, next stop Trento!
