Assessing land surface phenology in Araucaria-Nothofagus forests in Chile with Landsat 8/Sentinel-2 time series
Led by Eric Kosczor, the environmental remote sensing group published a new study on the phenology of Araucaria-Nothofagus forests. We used time series analysis from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery (2016-2020) to derive phenology at high spatial resolution. We found a delayed start of season at higher elevation, in sparsely vegetated stands, or in stands dominated by Nothofagus antarctica. The start of season occurs later with colder winter and spring temperatures. Elevation is the main control on the spatial-temporal variability of phenology in Araucaria-Nothofagus forests.
Eric Kosczor performed this analysis within his MSc thesis under supervision of Matthias Forkel and Jaime Hernandez (University of Chile). Daniel Kinalczyk helped with the processing of Landsat and Sentinel-2 data.
Congratulations, Eric!
