ÖSL-NRW – Management and remuneration of forest ecosystem services in North Rhine-Westphalia
The situation facing the German forestry industry has deteriorated significantly in recent years as a result of global climate change. Storms, periods of drought and bark beetle infestations have caused extensive damage to forests throughout Germany. In addition to the natural damage, this has also led to considerable economic losses.
Project Objective
The aim of the project is to develop a remuneration system in the form of a forest performance bonus for the model region in North Rhine-Westphalia in order to promote reforestation and climate-friendly forest conversion. The remuneration system, which is based on performance points for selected ecosystem services (ESS), is designed to take account of the complex performance profile of the forest.
The Geosensor Systems Working Group focuses on UAV-based information gathering on damaged areas. The parameters derived can be used to assess the current forest ecosystem services. Among other things, RGB cameras, multispectral cameras and UAV-based laser scanning are used.
