Green Chemisty & Benign-By-Design
In our research, we are committed to proactively preventing the contamination of the environment and waterways by hazardous chemicals. We support the development of new chemical products and processes by designing chemicals in a targeted manner with reduced environmental risk potential according to the “Benign-by-Design” principle. To this end, we combine in silico methodswith experimental approaches to comprehensively assess the persistence, mobility, and ecotoxicity of chemicals and to derive structure-property relationships. A central focus of our work is to support users and developers in integrating environmentally friendly chemicals into their processes. When conflicting objectives arise, we assist by substituting problematic substances or implementing appropriate emission-reduction measures—for example, through the use of selective separation techniques. We have already successfully applied our approaches in various areas, including:
- the development of liquid hydrogen carriers for the engery transition,
- the class of ionic liquids as solvents,
- benzophenone-based UV filters,
- chemicals for textile finishing,
- sustainable nanomaterials
- as well as the reduction of microplastic emissions from synthetic textiles.
With our interdisciplinary approach, we contribute to more sustainable chemical use and to environmental protection.
