New EU project: CRossWATER
After almost a year and a half of intensive preparation, the grant agreement for the EU-funded project CRossWATER: transboundary groundwater management for a climate-resilient water supply in the European City of Görlitz-Zgorzelec was signed at the end of November 2024. This marked the official launch of an important project on the Polish-Saxon border for the sustainable management and protection of groundwater resources under changing climate conditions. The Institute of Groundwater Management at TUD is the lead partner in this project. The project CRossWATER will be implemented in the period from January 2025 to December 2027 as part of the EU-INTERREG programme Poland - Saxony 2021-2027. With a total project budget of EUR 1,754,537.36, of which EUR 1,403,629.87 is funded by the EU, the project aims to increase the climate resilience of the European City of Görlitz-Zgorzelec, improve the security of the water supply and ensure the sustainable use of the transboundary groundwater system.
The international project consortium consists of the TUD, the Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach (University of Silesia in Katowice), the city administrations of Görlitz and Zgorzelec, the waterworks Görlitz and Zgorzelec. On the TUD side, the European Project Center (EPC) is responsible for administrative coordination. The Institute of Groundwater Management is responsible for the management and implementation of whole project tasks, supported by the Core Facility Environmental Analytics and the Institute of Water Chemistry for the tasks related to environmental analysis with a focus on micropollutants. The project CRossWATER will make a significant contribution to transboundary cooperation and to securing the water supply in the European City of Görlitz-Zgorzelec - an important step towards a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
