INOWAS invited to attend the 37th CIS Working Group Groundwater Meeting in Helsinki
In 2001, the European Commission launched the Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) for the Water Framework Directive (WFD), an initiative aimed at the successful implementation of key legislation in the European Union. Within this framework, five different working groups meet twice a year with representatives of all EU Member States and associated institutions to discuss the best ways to implement EU policy. One of the tasks of the Groundwater Working Group is to "explore the need and, where appropriate, develop guidance on groundwater recharge practices that are consistent with the WFD and the Groundwater Directive". The expected outcome is a guideline on groundwater recharge, a much needed legal framework for the safe use of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) in Europe. At the invitation of Manuel Sapiano, CEO of the Energy and Water Agency Malta and main initiator of the Groundwater Recharge Directive, Catalin Stefan, head of the INOWAS research group at TU Dresden, and Prof Christoph Schüth from TU Darmstadt attended the 37th CIS-Working Group Groundwater Meeting in Helsinki, Finland, from October 14-15, 2019.
