FREEWAT Training Course at TU Dresden: Water resource management with the FREEWAT platform integrated in QGIS, 19-21 May 2017
Within the project H2020 FREEWAT (FREE and open source software tools for WATer resource management), the course “Water resource management with the FREEWAT platform integrated in QGIS” aims at presenting the modules integrated in FREEWAT, a free and open source simulation platform integrated in QGIS, for water resource management. The Workshop held by the platform developers will be hosted by the Center for Advanced Water Research (CAWR), organized by TU Dresden Institute for Groundwater Management and the Junior Research Group INOWAS, and will take place at TU Dresden on 19-21 May. More information on FREEWAT can be found here.
Participants of the course will have the opportunity, through the completion of practical exercises, to acquire or strengthen skills in using QGIS, and to acquire the theoretical concepts and become familiar with the modeling tools integrated in FREEWAT for: (i) simulating groundwater flow and the interaction with the surface water; (ii) managing hydrochemical and time series data; (iii) simulating solute transport and the joint use of surface water and groundwater for water resource management.
The following training material will be provided for free:
- the FREEWAT software;
- user manuals;
- theoretic lectures;
- tutorials and related data sets.
Schedule
The course is divided in two parts:
- the first part will take place remotely designed as self-study and will be devoted to acquire (or refresh) the basics of numerical modeling for the simulation of groundwater flow and the interactions with surface water, and to get acquainted with software tools for management of hydrochemical and time series data. For this purpose, tutorials (including slides and data sets) will be provided. Participants will perform tutorials autonomously. Technical support will be guaranteed via email, phone or skype;
- during the second part, designed as Workshop, lectures will be delivered to present and discuss FREEWAT modules for groundwater flow as well as the simulation of solute transport processes, saltwater intrusion and the conjunctive use of ground– and surface-water for water resource management in rural environments.
Workshop hours are currently scheduled as: May19th: 2 PM–6 PM; May 20th: 8 AM–6 PM; May 21st: 8 AM–12 noon.
Application procedure and further information
