Titel (Englisch)
Fouling minimised reclamation of secondary effluent with Reverse Osmosis (ReSeRO)
Kurzbeschreibung (Deutsch)
Kurzbeschreibung (Englisch)
With rising water scarcity and degrading raw water quality in arid regions the tendency to use secondary effluents for irrigation in agriculture and further treat them to drinking water quality increases. For this purpose reverse osmosis processes (RO) in combination with other treatment processes are applied. The limiting factor for the use of membrane processes in water treatment is membrane fouling, which is mainly due to the deposition of small particles (colloids), microorganisms and organic substances on the membrane. Within the bilateral German-Israeli BMBFproject ReSeRO (Fouling minimized reclamation of secondary effluents with reverse osmosis) the impact of different pretreatment steps on minimizing the fouling formation on reverse osmosis membranes is being studied and optimized. The pretreatment steps flocculation, biofiltration and ultrafiltration (UF) are analyzed and investigated. In the case of UF process studies, especially different types of modified membranes are used.Ultrafiltration is used for the removal of particulate matter and microorganisms. Embedded into a hybrid process together with flocculation, adsorption and biofiltration, substances leading to fouling on the RO membrane can be removed. For experimental investigations of fouling formation novel test cells for reverse osmosis membranes are being developed and constructed. They are set in series to simulate a standard configuration of a pressure tube with six spiral wound modules. For evaluation the flows of concentrate, permeate and feed are analyzed. Particularly conductivity, dissolved organic matter, turbidity and spectral absorption coefficient are parameters of major interest. Furthermore the hydrodynamic flow conditions on the RO membrane, the for-ming particulate fouling layers in the UF membrane and the biological removal of organic substances are modelled. These investigations will help for better understanding of the fouling formation of reverse osmosis membranes and lead to optimized pretreatment steps to clean secondary effluents for unrestricted irrigation.
