Kurzbeschreibung (Englisch)
A frequent quality problem in drinking water distribution systems is the occurence of discoloured „brown water“. Discoloured water is caused by corrosion in the pipelines, and to a high degree by the mobilisation of sediments in the distribution network. “Brown water” affects the utility of drinking water and results in decreased consumer acceptance. Besides having an adverse aesthetical effect, mobilised sediments can be a source of nutrients and a habitat for microorganisms.
Within a research project, a model for the simulation of the formation, mobilisation and displacement of sediments in distribution networks will be developed. One objective of the research project is the development of a transport model, which describes the transport and sedimentation of corrosion products, particles remaining from water treatment and particles being formed during distribution (aggregation of coagulants).
At a small-scale pilot plant, the sedimentation, mobilisation and transport behaviour of the relevant particles were investigated. Systematic experiments with a variation of flow velocity, stagnation periods, temperatures and different waters were carried out. The pilot plant consisted of two different pipe materials (steel, plastics) in order to differentiate corrosion products from particles dosed. The experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model describing the transport behaviour of corrosion products.
