Bernhard Müller is a planner and geographer. From 1997 until June 2019, he was the director of the Leibniz-Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER). Between 2001 and 2019, he was the chair holder of the Chair of Spatial Development at TU Dresden. Between 1993 and 2000, he was Professor for Spatial Planning in the Institute of Geography at TU Dresden.
His fields of research include the following topics: spatial development, especially with regard to environmental issues and sustainability, urban research, urban and regional development, international cooperation, regional cooperation and governance, as well as environmental planning and resiliency research.
Bernhard Müller was the vice president of the Leibniz Association as well as the initiator and (co-) founder of the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS). He is member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig (SAW), the Academy for Spatial Development in the Leibniz Association (ARL) and an international member of the Serbian Academy for Engineering Sciences. As a member of the Policy Unit on "Urban Spatial Strategies: Land Market and Segregation", he was involved in the elaboration of the New Urban Agenda of the United Nations.
