Dealing with the consequences of increasing mobility is one of the key societal challenges of the 21st century. The traffic- and environmental problems, which have been growing for years particularly in metropolitan areas, together with the ongoing climate debate, are leading to an increased share of modern rail systems within the modal split. The European high-speed rail network continues to expand, rail freight transport is also increasing in absolute terms, and many major cities have rediscovered tram and light rail systems that were once regarded as outdated and obstructive.
