Municipal Survey On Mobility
Welcome to the “Municipal Survey on Mobility“ information page
We are pleased that you are interested in the municipal survey.
This online survey closed on 6 June 2023. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all municipalities that took part in the online survey.
The results of the nationwide municipal survey were presented in the webinar "Indikatoren nachhaltiger urbaner Mobilität" on September 24, 2024.
The survey is part of the research project Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators Germany commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and was carried out by the Chair of Integrated Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden together with the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) from 4 April to 6 June 2023.
Participation in the online survey was voluntary. The requirements of data protection are taken into account. You can download the data protection declaration here:

The online survey is addressed to employees of German municipalities with a population of at least 5,000 inhabitants. The employees should preferably work in the field of mobility and transport planning.
The core of the research project is the development of an indicator system to assess sustainable (urban) mobility. Your participation is of great importance in order for us to develop indicators that are relevant for German municipalities and able to be used in practice. Based on your practical experience, you can provide us with important information that helps to ensure the development of suitable indicators.
The survey questions focus on understandings of sustainability, goals in mobility and transport planning, and indicators/data that are already being used to assess sustainable mobility in your municipality.
Filling out the survey will take approx. 20–25 minutes. You can save your answers as a draft at any time and return to complete the survey later.
The survey is part of the research project “Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators Germany” commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and carried out by a project consortium consisting of Rupprecht Consult, the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu), VDI/VDE-IT and the Chairs of Transport Ecology and of Mobility System Planning and Traffic Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden.
Project goals:
A set of urban mobility indicators to enable standardized assessment of mobility systems across European cities has previously been developed within the EU project “Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators” – SUMI (2017-2020). In the current project, these indicators will be reviewed and adapted to the German context.
The aim of the project is to develop a broad-based indicator system supported by German municipalities and to provide municipalities with practical guidance on its application.
Project contents:
Against this background, we are creating a comprehensive overview of the objectives and indicator definitions used in strategic transport planning in Germany, analyzing the existing European SUMI indicator set, identifying the need for change, and, with the involvement of municipalities and other relevant stakeholders, developing additional context-specific German sustainable mobility indicators.
Based on the European concept, indicators of sustainable mobility that are already being used in cities and municipalities will be recorded, further developed, and made accessible.
Through this German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV)-funded project, an exchange and dialog with municipalities will be facilitated, focusing on German perspectives and understandings of sustainability.
