Travel survey by app
Welcome!
To find out how people get around on a daily basis and to estimate urban mobility trends based on this data, we at TUD Dresden University of Technology conducted a travel survey using a smartphone app in the cities of Dresden and Berlin (April 7, 25–July 27, 25). The survey focused on all forms of mobility—including by car, bus, and train; by bike; on foot; and via new modes of transportation such as electric scooters.
The survey is now complete. We would like to say thank you —to everyone who participated, contributed to the survey via the smartphone app, and provided feedback!
The results have been compiled in the form of interactive mobility profiles (German). You can access them by clicking on the respective city:
In addition, a poster (German) is available that compares the results of the two cities.
Thanks to the high accuracy of the data collection, mobility can be analyzed not only in terms of trips 1 but even in individual trips stages 2 By participating
over several days, mobility trends can be analyzed in greater detail—thus revealing intermodal mobility behavior, in which multiple modes of transportation are combined within a single trip.
Smartphone-Based Mobility Survey
In the “Städte in Bewegung” project, mobility behavior was collected using the smartphone app “StiB: Städte in Bewegung”, which was developed specifically for this research project. The app was programmed for this research project by the Berlin-based software company motiontag.
The data obtained from the survey is extremely valuable for transportation planning. The results serve as an important foundation for ensuring mobility, making urban transportation even more adaptable in the future, and tailoring it to your needs.

Footnotes
-
Trip: A change of location with exactly one main purpose (e.g., commute to work). A trip may consist of several stages if different modes of transportation are used.
-
Tripl Stage: A section of a trip that is traveled using exactly one mode of transportation without interruption due to a change in mode. A new leg begins with each change of mode (transfer).
