TU Dresden's Smart Mobility Lab is being built in Hoyerswerda
On June 10, 2025, MDR reported on the construction of a new TU Dresden research center in Lusatia. The SML - Smart Mobility Lab - is being built in the immediate vicinity of Hoyerswerda. A pioneering location that will combine research and development in the fields of automated driving, automated flying, robotics and automated agriculture.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Günther Prokop, holder of the Chair of Automotive Engineering, is the spokesperson for the Smart Mobility Lab and one of a total of 6 Principal Investigators. He will use the SML with its modern test environments, laboratories and simulation facilities for research into the safety of automated driving. The aim is to conduct realistic research into complex systems in the interaction between driver, vehicle and environment. Teaching will also benefit directly: students will be able to work on future topics such as driving automation, system integration and traffic simulation in a practical way.
From Idea to Reality - Mobility Research takes Shape
The company GOLDBECK has been commissioned with the construction of the new building, which is being built using the proven system construction method. The site is currently still characterized by intensive construction activities - completion of the SML is scheduled for the end of 2026. The current progress can be followed via a construction site camera.
The center sees itself not only as an infrastructure for scientific excellence, but also as a driving force for the structural development of Lusatia. As a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and technology transfer, it will offer new opportunities for cooperation with industry and science in the future.
The MDR report highlights the strategic importance of this project for TU Dresden and the region and shows how mobility research is being shaped on site.
