Review ENERDAY 2025 - 19TH International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology

Teilnehmer des 19. ENERDAYs
This year's "ENERDAY - International Conference on Energy Economics and Technology" marks another successful conference in the 19-year history of our international energy economics conference. Around 100 participants from science and industry gathered in the Auditorium Center of TU Dresden on April 4, 2025 under the motto "Shaping Markets, Shaping Futures: Renewables and Flexibility in Modern Energy Systems" to learn more about current topics through exciting presentations, discuss research results and, of course, to exchange ideas with each other.
The conference kicked off with the first keynote talk by Prof. Dr. Felix Müsgens, holder of the Chair of Energy Economics at BTU Cottbus. He spoke about how the merit order in electricity markets changes when electricity is supplied entirely by fluctuating renewable energies in combination with large-scale storage. According to Prof. Müsgens, a functioning energy-only market can still exist despite the marginal costs of these technologies being zero. In the new market equilibrium, phases with prices around zero and curtailment are not malfunctions, but necessary elements. The market thus provides sufficient incentives for the expansion of storage facilities and their cost-covering operation. Using the German and Texan markets as examples, he showed what supply curves and price duration curves look like in a market that is completely characterized by fluctuating renewable energies in combination with large-scale storage.
The second keynote session after lunch was given by Dr. Klaus von Sengbusch from 50Hertz Transmission GmbH. In his presentation "Success factors for a fast, safe and efficient expansion of the transmission grid", he provided insights into the success factors of safe and efficient grid expansion and operation. The focus was on the planned developments for grid expansion, what significance these have for the integration of renewable energies under different expansion scenarios and what effects they will have on the expected redispatch volumes. He thus provided valuable insights into planning processes and the model-based validation of various grid development strategies from a welfare economics perspective. He also spoke about the increasing relevance of modeling flexibility in grid development plans and that issues of system stability are now of increasing importance and are taken into account in grid development plans.
In addition to the keynote speeches, the parallel scientific sessions with various thematic presentations offered a comprehensive look at the complex of topics relating to the design of future energy markets in the context of the energy transition. The focus was on the integration of renewable energies and the role of flexibility options - such as storage, load management and digital technologies - in ensuring a stable and efficient energy system. A wide range of topics in the energy industry were discussed, such as electricity market design, technological innovations and the cross-sectoral transformation of the energy system. The detailed lecture program is still available here.
After a day full of informative presentations and lively discussions, ENERDAY 2025 came to a close with the conference dinner, which took place in the Louisenhof with a wonderful view of the Elbe Valley in perfect weather. The Best Presentation Award was presented during the dinner.

Ausblick Elbtal
The Best Presentation Award is given for outstanding presentations by young researchers at ENERDAY. A committee consisting of representatives of the Gesellschaft für Energiewirtschaft und Energiepolitik (GEE), enerCONNECT e.V. and the organizing institutions selected Kiana Niazmand (TUD Dresden University of Technology) for her presentation "Economic assessment of negative emissions from sustainable biomass in Europe" and Felix Fliegner (TU Dresden & 50Hertz Transmission GmbH) for his presentation "Gone with the wind? - Quantifying wake losses for offshore wind farms and a discussion of mitigation measures" to this year's award winners.
