KonStGas
Convergent Utilisation of Power and Natural Gas Transmission Systems for a Better Integration of Fluctuating Renewable Energy Sources
Objective
In cause of the rising amount of renewable energies in the German energy system fluctuating generation increases. Up to now, the main research efforts focus on developments in energy storage technologies and the integration in the existing power grid. This project looks to the power-to-gas technology that couples the electrical power system with the natural gas system. The following aspects will be investigated in detail:
- Coupling the power system and natural gas system in Germany to determine the potential to store, integrate and distribute power from RES in 2050
- Modelling dynamic energy flows of energy supply and demand regarding the whole energy system and an efficient energy transformation of both, the power and gas sector
- Economic analyses regarding decreasing emissions of greenhouse gases, increasing security of supply of energy and minimizing the total system costs
Contribution of the Chair of Energy Economics
During the project a European natural gas trade model will be developed. Regarding the natural gas trade flows, the model identifies gas prices for different market areas as well as import and export volumes until 2050. Furthermore, the impact of “renewable gas” on the European gas market will be investigated model based.
