Shaping Markets, Shaping Futures: Renewables and Flexibility in Modern Energy Systems
Friday, 4th April 2025
Technische Universität Dresden, Dresden, Germany
The upcoming ENERDAY25 will explore how future energy systems with a high share of renewable energy and flexibility options can work, addressing key challenges for market design, infrastructure development, and balancing supply and demand. Key questions include how market design needs to be adapted to accommodate renewable energy sources, what market structures best support flexible energy systems, and how demand-side responses can be incentivized to balance loads. Infrastructure development is essential for increased renewable generation, depending on simultaneous transmission- and distribution grid as well as renewables extension. Discussions will also explore how regulatory frameworks can accelerate the deployment of renewables and drive innovation in energy technologies, including smart grid solutions. Beyond electricity, district heating networks and alternative carriers like hydrogen are gaining importance. These systems provide essential flexibility through storage capabilities while facilitating sector coupling to achieve a fully decarbonized energy system.
Venue and Agenda
The conference will be hosted by the Chair of Energy Economics on 4th April, 2025 as an in-person event at the TU Dresden with the possibility of online participation.
The venue for the ENERDAY25 is the Hörsaalzentrum (HSZ) at the TU Dresden Campus. While living up to the concept of having short ways at conferences, all session rooms are in close proximity to each other, which are located at the 3rd and 4th level of the HSZ. Information on how to get to the HSZ and a highlighted floor plan of the conference can be found here
A first version of the program will be made availabe soon after the call for paper ends. So stay tuned!

Evening Events
In the spirit of its long-standing tradition, the conference provides a platform for sharing experiences and engaging in discussion with international representatives from science, industry and politics on current topics in the field of energy economics and technology. Since the ENERDAY should also be a suitable framework for social and scientific exchange, we offer the opportunity to participate in a pre-conference dinner (3rd April, 2025) and/or a gala-dinner (4th April, 2025), which are covered by the conference fees. In order to avoid subsequent organisational inconveniences, we kindly ask you to announce your participation already during the registration process. You can select either both, only one or no event in which you plan to participate.
Call for Papers
For the 19th ENERDAY we seek contributions that address the challenges and opportunities presented by the current energy crisis, and how it is influencing our future energy system (Call for Papers).
The ENERDAY25 aims to contribute to developing a resilient and sustainable energy system that meets future demands while supporting decarbonization efforts across sectors. The conference will address pressing issues in energy systems, markets and policies, focusing on flexibility and the deployment of renewable energy. We welcome contributions that explore empirical analysis, numerical modelling, best practice examples, policy and market design innovations, and technological advances. Special attention will be given to fostering the dialogue on the economic and technical aspects of energy systems. Contributions - whether theoretical or applied - may address the following topics:
I. Cross-sectoral focus |
II. Sector-specific focus |
