Start of project on robust integrated railway planning at DB Regio AG
On February 1st, 2022, started the joint project of DB Regio AG with our Chair of Industrial Management. The goal is to identify and quantify indicators for an integrated robust planning in passenger rail transport by analyzing and comparing planning data against the actual operation. Commonly, all planinng task (i.e. especially timetabling, vehicle scheduling, and crew scheduling) are considered sequentially and mainly independent from each other with the help of optimization methods. However, the consequences of these planning results on following tasks and also on reliability of the complete railway system are difficult to describe and often unknown to the planner. By our project we aim to close this gap by using a data-driven approach. This would be a valuable contribution to both the current state of research as well as the practical operations at DB Regio AG. Our appraoch builds on the results of the previous project Identification and analysis of the interactions between planning stages in regional rail transport.
