Visiting scholar Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu released into house arrest
TU Dresden, together with politicians, human rights organizations and Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu's family, has been campaigning for his release ever since. A first success has now been achieved. As his family announced, Gubad Ibadoghlu was released into house arrest on April 22, 2024, which finally makes it possible for him to receive the urgently needed medical care. TU Dresden very much hopes that the Azerbaijani government will release Gubad Ibadoghlu and allow him to travel to Germany so that we can welcome him to TU Dresden as soon as possible.
Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu is a world-renowned economist who has studied corruption, the diversion of natural resource profits and the detrimental economic consequences of autocratic rule. As a Dresden Fellow and scholarship holder of the Philipp Schwartz Foundation, he has been invited as a guest at TU Dresden for several months to conduct research at the Chair of Economics, in particular Public Finance, together with Prof. Dr. Marcel Thum. Since July 24, 2023, however, he has been imprisoned in Azerbaijan for alleged possession of counterfeit money.
