The Academic Job Market
Associate Professor of Finance at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University
Thomas Lambert is Distinguished Research Fellow 2025 and visits the Faculty vom November 17-19. He is Associate Professor of Finance and Academic Director at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. His research interests are in Corporate Finance, Entrepreneurship, FinTech, and Political Economy. His work has been presented at major conferences around the world, including the NBER Summer Institute, AEA, EFA, SFS Cavalcade and FIRS meetings, and published in leading academic journals, including the Economic Journal and Management Science.
In this talk, Thomas Lambert will share insights on the academic job market, drawing on his experience from both sides: first as a candidate on the supply side a decade ago, and since then as a hiring committee member on the demand side almost every year. He will cover how to position your research, navigate applications and interviews, interpret signals from departments, and demystify what committees really look for. Because this is the most crucial moment of the PhD, his goal is to offer practical guidance, lessons learned, and a clear view of the process to help you move from promise to placement. While the focus is on the economics and finance markets, the lessons generalize to other management fields.
