Research stay by Dr Gunda-Alexandra Detmers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
From September to October 2022, Gunda-Alexandra Detmers completed a research stay in Kuala Lumpur, which was funded by the Award of the Deutsche Bundesbank for International Research Cooperation. Besides the scientific exchange, the central aims of the research stay were to develop research projects and to deepen the cooperation with Sui-Jade Ho (Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysian Central Bank) and Özer Karagedikli (Asia School of Business in cooperation with MIT Sloan School of Management). She had previously worked with both on a project on inflation expectations and the resulting article, "Understanding Consumer Inflation Expectations during the Covid-19 Pandemic", appeared in the Australian Economic Review in March 2022. While this first joint project was realised entirely virtually and from different locations in different time zones, the research visit allowed for an even more profound discourse and extensive collaboration. "In our first project, we only looked at consumer inflation expectations in the US during the pandemic, but we already had numerous ideas to expand our research. Specifically, during my research stay we were able to address the aspect of private house price expectations as well as the de-anchoring risks of expectations," Gunda-Alexandra Detmers concludes.
The Asia School of Business was founded in 2015 and emerged from a cooperation between Bank Negara Malaysia and MIT Sloan. While the focus at the beginning was on the development of MBA programmes, there has also been a Master's programme with a focus on monetary policy since 2021. This Master of Central Banking is implemented in cooperation with MIT Sloan and primarily attended by central bankers from Asia and the emerging countries. In the immediate proximity of the campus, there is also the Bank Negara Malaysia and the South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Research and Training Centre. Gunda-Alexandra Detmers appreciates the research environment on campus as well as the new contacts and states, "I was warmly welcomed by the members of the local institutions and benefited a lot from the lively exchange they maintain with each other through joint research seminars and projects.”
