New EJIS publication delivers empirical insights into the design of algorithmic control systems
As part of their DFG-funded AlgoWork project (project description on DFG website), Armin Alizadeh and Alexander Benlian (both from TU Darmstadt), together with Martin Wiener, have published a new article in the European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS). The authors introduce a three-layer conceptual framework for algorithmic control systems (control, data, and organizational embedding) and outline key design choices within each layer. Drawing on this framework, they conducted an experimental vignette study with 329 workers to examine how these design choices shape workers’ perceptions of autonomy and exploitation and, ultimately, their judgments of system legitimacy.
