Professor Wiener invited as expert to European Commission workshop on algorithmic management
Professor Martin Wiener was invited by the European Commission (Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion) to participate as an expert in a high-level workshop on algorithmic management, held on March 25, 2026, in Brussels.
The invitation reflects Professor Wiener’s recognized expertise in the digital transformation of work and his ongoing research on the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in organizational contexts. The workshop brought together a select group of international experts from academia and practice to examine current and future technological developments in algorithmic management systems, which are increasingly shaping managerial functions across industries.
Discussions focused on the technical foundations and system architectures underlying algorithmic management, including AI-driven tools for recruitment, task allocation, workflow coordination, and performance monitoring. Particular attention was given to emerging developments such as agentic AI systems, advanced monitoring technologies, and the integration of data-driven decision-making into workplace management structures.
A key objective of the workshop was to provide a forward-looking perspective on how these systems are likely to evolve over the next decade, distinguishing between short-term developments already being deployed and longer-term innovations that may fundamentally reshape the organization of work. By contributing his expertise, Professor Wiener supported the European Commission’s efforts to build a robust technological understanding of algorithmic management as a foundation for future policy discussions.
His participation highlights the Chair’s active role in contributing to European-level debates on the future of work and the governance of emerging digital technologies.
