Knowledge sharing is a vital process for a successful organization in today`s volatile know-
ledge society as well as an emerging field of research in the last years. With regard to this
aspect, the thesis will focus on the topic of knowledge sharing and how its diverse set of tools
help to share and distribute the competitive knowledge of an enterprise.
Therefore an extensive literature review unveiled the importance of knowledge management
and knowledge sharing in particular. The thesis explores the functions, prerequisites and
barriers of knowledge sharing. Furthermore it categorizes the available knowledge sharing
tools and critically evaluates them with regard to its practical usage in the economic environ-
ment. In the second part of this thesis an empirical study of about 30 enterprises based within
the Free State of Saxony underlines the dissemination and acceptance of knowledge manage-
ment and its distinct knowledge sharing applications.
